I am so thankful for the H.Y.M.N.S program. I am, where I am today because of this program. I remember deciding I wanted to go back to school, but I had no way to pay for classes. Being a single mom, there wasn’t any extra funds in the budget to pay for a semester of classes. I had tried school once before, but life happened, and I lost my ability to use Pell Grants and loans. I felt so stuck, because I wanted nothing more than to be a nurse. I remember talking to a friend at church about my situation and she gave me information on the H.Y.M.N.S program. I was so excited, until I wasn’t when I realized I didn’t qualify on paper for the program. I still decided to apply, and after talking to Mrs. Jackie on the phone for over an hour, she decided to give me a chance. Her decision to take a chance on me, changed the trajectory of my story. The H.Y.M.N.S program paid for my first semester of school and that is what I needed to get me started. I went on to finish up my general education courses and eventually applied and got accepted into nursing school. I completed my nursing program in May 2020 and have been practicing as a Registered Nurse for 2 years. I am so incredibly thankful for the opportunity this ministry gave me and my son.
When life knocked us down and we didn’t have relatives or friends to turn to, HYMNS stepped up and played a major role in my family’s life. Because of this wonderful ministry, my children and I didn't get our lights and gas cut off, and we didn't lose our home and have to live in a shelter. The services and guidance that HYMNS offers was extremely helpful. They offered financial assistance and spiritual guidance, as well as friendship and a listening ear. I am forever grateful and blessed to be part of this beautiful program that lifts up single moms in tough situations and helps them become self-sufficient.
At the age of 16 my caregiver passed away, and I found myself homeless and alone. At this time, I was enrolled in a program that allowed me to live in my own apartment and a supervisor would check in on me and make sure I was staying on track. Ms. Jackie was the person assigned to look after me. She helped guide me and encouraged me to elevate my standards by being the mother figure I always needed. I can always call on her for prayer at any time. Ms. Jackie showed love for me by supporting me and praying for my father as he took his last breath. She has been by my side through all my hard times, helping me out with everything from light bills to food or gas in my car. Being a mother has not always been easy, but with the help of Ms. Jackie listening and giving sound advice, I was able to persevere. I was told as a teen that I wouldn't amount to anything because I had no one to look out for me, but I exceeded everyone’s expectations, and I have Ms. Jackie to thank for that. She was there for me well after the program ended, and I know that God sent me the best mother figure I could ever ask for!
I'm a people pleaser, and I have always been this way my entire life. Longing to make others feel good inside, ignoring my own feelings, left feeling empty. I knew that deep down inside the relationships were all one sided, not genuine. I kept looking for acceptance. One day I found myself in a financial emergency situation. I turned to those who I always tried to please. To my dismay I was let down, given MANY excuses because they couldn't help. I asked God "why are these people letting me down in this time of need when I've always been there for them?" I prayed and prayed for a financial blessing. Someone told me about Hymns. Hymns was there for me and my son in my time of need, my darkest moment. The burden was lifted. My prayer answered. Hymns has taught me that GOD accepts me just as I am, seeing my worth. I have turned my "pleasing others" in to pleasing GOD. Now my life has changed. When I feel down and out or veer from what I know is right, I reach out to Hymns for prayer so that I may continue to stay on the right path with GOD.
